The Best of Birkenhead

The Best of Birkenhead

Birkenhead has long been an important destination for our team, and it remains pivotal to our work as we continue to progress the Hind Street regeneration scheme alongside Wirral Council.

The town has an abundance of historic sights, from the beautiful Georgian splendour of Hamilton Square to the trailblazing Birkenhead Park, the world’s first public park and the apparent inspiration for New York’s Central Park, and the beautiful Birkenhead Priory.

However, for all its past glories, Birkenhead can also boast many strengths in its present and in its future.

Future Yard

Future Yard has quickly become a symbol of modern-day Birkenhead, providing a friendly neighbourhood venue for music, the arts and other live performances and an independent platform for emerging local artists.

Our vast experience of regeneration schemes across the UK tells us that thriving places can be built on a strong cultural offer. As Future Yard itself says, “music venues are the maternity wards of creative culture. They are always the trailblazers, the first cultural flagpole when it comes to thinking about a place differently.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

It is just a great spot to enjoy a cocktail, beer or coffee, with indoor and outdoor spaces to relax and is a firm favourite of our team at ION.  We can strongly recommend the pizzas.

Woodside

Woodside Ferry Village is located at the heart of the town’s waterfront and boasts a number of high-quality eateries. Sit back, enjoy some delicacies from the likes of Alex Pitta, Original Dirty Burger or Devina’s Mauritian Kitchen, and take in Liverpool’s iconic skyline.

It is currently closed for refurbishment, but typically every other weekend Woodside transforms with 30+ local independent businesses coming together for Woodside Market, featuring various local traders, makers and bakers.

This could be just the start for the Woodside area, with Wirral Council unveiling ambitious plans to develop a thriving waterfront community with restaurants and hotels, creating a “Brooklyn for Merseyside”.

Glen Affric Brewery

If you love your craft beers and real ale, as many of our team do, then Glen Affric is certainly the place for you.

Located on an industrial estate near the tunnel entrance and just a short walk from the town centre, this independent brewery and taproom has as many as 30 homegrown ales on draft at any given time, with ample seating and a great pizza oven if you’re feeling peckish.

It really captures everything that is good about the new, outward-looking Birkenhead and nowhere is this better exemplified than in the name of its most well-known creation – Bevvy Across the Mersey – exporting the best of Birkenhead to Liverpool and beyond!
